Artist Statement
Ed Hallborg began working as a carpenter and is a retired member of the Carpenters Union of Buffalo, NY. He holds a BS in Design from Buffalo State College. Ed currently serves as the Technical Director and Resident Designer for the Theatre Department of Hobart and William Smith Colleges. He has won awards for both his Set Design and Studio Art. He is a resident of WNY with a strong nostalgia for time spent in the Desert landscapes of the Southwest. My interest is mainly in an unusual form of applied cement I refer to as “Cement Painting” and the end product as a “glyph”. In a similar process to stucco, I take advantage of modern materials and techniques to execute a sort of predictive realism in a cement frieze. I am working with the idea that these cement/stone images will be the only records to tell our story to future civilizations many, many years from now.
